Farm and Family Name History Links to Topics on this Page
There are several ways to spell the last names of the people who came from our farm in Norway. The spelling of the farm name has changed several times since the 1600's. How you spell your name probably depends on when your ancestors moved away from the farm. Changing names makes keeping track of our ancestors more difficult. Searches for information may need to be done with all the name variations to be complete. Different sources can also list the same Hostager with the last name spelled differently. Usually a little detective work can determine whether two different spellings are in fact the same person. What Does the Family Name Mean? Høst in Norwegian dictionaries can mean either 'autumn' or 'harvest' or 'crop'. The word åker or aker in Norwegian translates into field or cultivated field. So, our full name may mean autumn field, or harvest field. The Oluf Rygh information at the end of this page even suggests that the name may mean, "place where crops mature first, far from autumn".

Note: This information was found in the Kulturnet Sogn Og Fjordane database under the heading "Oluf Rygh - farmnames". I am not sure what the source for the information is, but it does seem to be composed of the same or a similar archaic language as the Tingboks.
